Washington, DC- Congresswoman Linda Sánchez (CA-39) today released the following statement in response to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals declaring California's voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage unconstitutional in a 2 – 1 decision.  Proposition 8 (Prop. 8) was narrowly passed in November 2008 and amended the California constitution to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry.

"Today’s ruling is a victory for civil rights and puts California one step closer towards righting a terrible injustice.  Prop. 8 accomplished nothing besides denigrating the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California, and I commend the Ninth Circuit Court for recognizing that Prop. 8 sanctioned discrimination. I look forward to the day in California when all couples will have the opportunity to stand before their friends and family and share the love and commitment they have for each other by legally entering into marriage.”
